Your Complete Guide to Understanding Gestational Surrogacy

Gone are the days when infertility had no solution. Now, becoming parents is a dream every couple can realize with the help of gestational surrogacy. While the name is confusing to many people, gestational surrogacy is a simple concept to understand. Moreover, this kind of surrogacy is perfectly legal—even though the process may sometimes seem windingly long—in the end, this kind of surrogacy is one of the best ways for an infertile couple to have a child of their own.

But what does gestational surrogacy mean?

    What is gestational surrogacy?

Also known as full surrogacy or host surrogacy in the medical world, gestational surrogacy is when a woman who is the non-biological mother of the child carries the child in her womb for the whole duration of a pregnancy.

In Ukraine, gestational surrogacy is the only legal form of surrogacy.

First, the egg and the sperm are extracted out of the infertile couple’s bodies. Then with the help of a process called IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization), the fertilized egg is implanted into the body of the surrogate. Gestational surrogacy is just like IVF, the only difference is in the host of the egg.

    Who should consider gestational surrogacy?

While anyone can opt for gestational surrogacy, there are usually certain groups of people who benefit immensely from choosing this method to bring their child into this world.

Couples who cannot conceive or experience difficulty conceiving should opt for this form of surrogacy. Single parents, who wish to raise a child without marriage, can also opt for gestational surrogacy.

Couples who do not wish for any biological or genetic link to exist between their child and the surrogate also prefer this kind of surrogacy.

    How does it work?

Simply put, gestational surrogacy is an easy process. The couple has to find the right surrogate for their child, complete the legal formalities, and transfer the embryo to said surrogate and ensure a hassle-free pregnancy.

However, the process looks easy only on paper, so you will struggle with the details if there is a lack of thorough research on your part.

Let’s glance at the first step towards gestational surrogacy—hiring a surrogate. Since the surrogate isn’t someone you know personally, many couples struggle to find the right surrogate to carry their child in the womb.

While couples can independently look for an ideal surrogate, it is best advised that they seek help from a good surrogate agency to ease this anxiety-provoking search. Once that’s done, the legal portion comes next.

Once the couple finds an ideal match, the next step is to appoint a legal attorney to lay down the terms and conditions of the surrogacy period. It is strongly recommended that both the couple as well as the gestational carrier hire an attorney on their part to ensure a smooth process.

Once the surrogate’s compensation is agreed upon and the contracts are signed from both ends, the next step is transferring the embryo through IVF, which is completely handled by the IVF clinic. There are four different ways that gestational surrogacy can take place through IVF. The couple can choose either of the four options relative to their and the surrogate’s convenience.

    Four options for gestational surrogacy

First, the egg and the sperm of the actual parents are transferred to the gestational carrier. In this case, both the parents remain biologically connected to the offspring.

Second, the actual father’s sperm is fertilized with a donated/donor egg and transferred to the gestational carrier. In this scenario, only the male is biologically connected to the offspring.

Third, the actual mother’s egg is fertilized with the donated/donor sperm and transferred to the gestational carrier. In this scenario, only the female is biologically connected to the offspring.

Fourth, a donated egg and a donated sperm are fertilized to form an embryo, which is not extracted from the couple, and transferred to the gestational carrier. In this case, neither person from the couple nor the gestational surrogate is biologically connected to the offspring.

After successful childbirth by the surrogate, the actual parents of the offspring raise and get full legal custody of the child. However, this arrangement may vary from couple to couple and surrogate to surrogate.

    The bottom line

The bottom line is gestational surrogacy in Ukraine is the only legal form of surrogacy. However, here’s the good part—couples opting for gestational surrogacy do not have to worry about any legal complexities since the gestational carrier isn’t genetically related to the child.

This also allows the intended couple to form a professional and meaningful relationship with the surrogate, making the process easy for everyone involved.

With gestational surrogacy, the final result is always bound to be a happy one!
