GESTATIONAL SURROGACY?

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GESTATIONAL

 SURROGACY

Truthfully, gestational surrogacy is one of the paths to parenthood that has helped millions of couples and individuals grow their families around the world. Today, it is becoming increasingly common and is practiced in many countries where surrogacy is legal.

Are you interested in beginning your journey to gestational surrogacy, but you don’t have any information about it? Are you eager to learn how this auxiliary reproduction method could be the best option for starting a new family? Do you want to find out the cost so that you can plan your budget accordingly? Well, read on!

 WHAT IS GESTATIONAL SURROGACY?

Also known as full surrogacy or host surrogacy, gestational surrogacy is a form of surrogacy where the surrogate mother is not biologically related to the child. The embryo is created through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) or Intrauterine Insemination using the eggs and sperm of the intended parents and then transferred to the surrogate's uterus. Alternatively, the eggs or sperm could also come from a donor.

In gestational surrogacy, one of the parents must be genetically related to the baby, but the surrogate is not. Therefore, this form of surrogacy is simple and straightforward because second-parent or stepparent adoption is not necessary.

 HOW DOES GESTATIONAL SURROGACY WORKS?

To ensure that the gestational surrogacy process works smoothly and without any legal implications, several steps are followed as outlined below:

  • Finding a surrogacy opportunity

Gestational surrogacy starts with the intended parents looking for a surrogacy opportunity. This can be done through an attorney who specializes in assisted reproductive law or via a surrogacy agency.

  • The signing of the surrogacy contract

Before a contract is created, both the intended parents and the gestational carrier will have a meeting with a lawyer to discuss their legal responsibilities and any possible legal risks. When all parties are in agreement, the contract is drafted and signed.

  • Screening stage

After all the legal processes have been exhausted, the next phase is the screening of the surrogate mother. This includes an array of clinical processes, such as psychological capacity, compatibility, infectious diseases, and general health.

After the surrogate is deemed fit to carry the pregnancy to term, both parties are expected to sign a consent form that pertains to pre-birth and post-birth processes. This ensures that everyone is aware of the procedures.

  • Implantation

Once everyone is satisfied and consents are signed, the clinic will then create the embryo through IVF and take care of the embryo transfer process.

In most cases, an embryo is created and transferred using the eggs and sperm of the intended parents. Because of this, the couple is genetically related to the baby.

In other cases, donated eggs are fertilized using the intended father’s sperm. Therefore, only the intended father is related to the baby.

  • Pregnancy phase

This is the final step of the process in which the surrogate carries the pregnancy to term, just like any other pregnancy. During this period, she is expected to follow the requirements of the intended parents, which relate to the health and overall wellness of the baby.

These requirements may include regular medical checks, regimens, and a recommended diet.

After conception, the intended parents take full legal custody of the child.

HOW MUCH DOES GESTATIONAL SURROGACY COST?

Gestational surrogacy is a lengthy process that involves a host of professionals, the use of ultra-modern technology, and over nine months of commitment from a woman who is confident and willing to carry a pregnancy to term for another person.

The cost of gestational surrogacy varies from country to country, but expect to spend an average of $70,000-$150,000 on the process. This covers attorney fees, surrogate compensation and expenses, clinical procedures, agency fees, and any other costs associated with this reproduction method.

In some countries, however, the cost of having a baby through gestational surrogacy can be cheaper. For instance, expect to pay around $40,000-$60,000 in Ukraine for the entire process.

Ukraine is a European nation that has been hailed as an international hub for surrogacy, thanks to its supportive legislation and cheaper alternatives. Therefore, this country could be the best destination for you to have your baby through this method.

However, it is important to remember that surrogacy is only legal for married heterosexual couples in Ukraine.

Tip: Remember, not all types of insurance cover the medical expenses for intended parents and surrogates. Therefore, talk to your agency and let professionals help you to determine a more accurate figure for the process and to explore any financing options you might have.

No international laws govern gestational surrogacy. There are some countries where the laws about this process are clear, while regulations are fairly unsettled and complex in others.

For this reason, it is essential for surrogates and intended parents to have separate lawyers who will guide them through the entire process and ensure their rights are not violated.

However, it is vital to note that the legal process in gestational surrogacy is normally less complex than other types of surrogacy. This is because one of the intended parents must be genetically related to the baby in this type of surrogacy, which minimizes or eliminates possible custody issues.

Every country on the globe determines surrogacy laws, and some don't allow any form of commercial surrogacy. Therefore, make sure you work with reputable lawyers or surrogacy agencies to help you choose a destination where you will complete the process without falling on the wrong side of the law.

As a couple, one of the best experiences is expanding your family and dealing with the challenges of bringing up biological children. If you cannot have a baby naturally due to valid reasons, then gestational surrogacy is a lengthy yet effective process that is worth your time, energy, and resources.
